The Network for Human Rights Documentation – Burma was founded in 2004 as a way for human rights groups in Myanmar to cooperate in documentation work.
Its vision is the recognition of human rights violations in Myanmar, action to restore and preserve the dignity of victims, and preventing serious human rights violations from happening again.
Its purpose is to advocate for the state to take responsibility for truth, justice, reparation and non-recurrence for victims, and its objective is to collect and publish high-quality and large volumes of human rights violation data among members and partners so that it can be used effectively.
The network, known as ND-Burma, has nine members, four associate members and six partner members, and has set three membership criteria. Members focus on documenting human rights violations specifically related to their own mandates. As a priority for creating a framework of rules for cooperation among members, the network has catalogued human rights violations using "defined terminology", and on that basis has published a manual specializing in 13 types of violations and a general documentation manual, and also runs trainings.
Human rights violation records collected by members are stored using Martus software, and the network continues to analyse them and publish reports.
The network publishes reports on past human rights violations by sector, and since the terrorist junta's coup on February 1, 2021, has also been documenting human rights violations and publishing and distributing weekly report records. It publishes reports sector by sector, compiling cases that match the 13 types of human rights violations the network specializes in, and also provides verified data for members' separate work.
ND-Burma's website also republishes, as news, statements by international and UN bodies on human rights violations in Myanmar, and compiles members' statements and reports in one place.
The network's members are the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (Burma) (AAPP-B), the Human Rights Foundation of Monland (HURFOM), the Kachin Women's Association – Thailand (KWAT), the Palaung Women's Organization (PWO), the Ta'ang Students and Youth Organization (TSYO), the Tavoyan Women's Union, the All Arakan Students' and Youths' Congress (AASYC), Human Rights Defenders and Promoters (HRDP) and the Future Light Center (FLC). Associate members are the Pa-O Youth Organization (PYO), the Chin Human Rights Organization (CHRO), the Bago East Former Political Prisoners Network and the Forerunner Voice group, and partner organizations are the International Center for Transitional Justice (ICTJ), Benetech, Human Rights Defenders and Promoters, Former Political Prisoners (FPPs), Asia Justice and Rights (AJAR) and REDRESS.
