Comprehensive Sanctions Drafted Against Military Group Under ILO - Article 33
The Confederation of Trade Unions, Myanmar (CTUM) announced that the General Director of the ILO has been instructed by the Board of directors to prepare a draft action plan for non-compliance with the ILO Constitution Article 33 on the right to freedom of association and forced labor in accordance with the International Labor Organization (ILO) criteria 87 and 29.
The ILO could take action under Article 33 if it failed to comply with the ILO’s standards and if did not comply with the recommendations for amendments from the ILO. There have been calls to take action on Myanmar’s military since 2021, and it was approved by the ILO conference decision held on November 6 to write a draft.
The conference was held at the ILO headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, and this was the first time Myanmar has been prosecuted under Article 33 since the military-led military junta took power in 2000. The draft must be prepared before the ILO Executive Board meeting in March 2025, and if approved by the ILO Conference in June, it will be possible to impose a comprehensive sanction on the military regime.
