China announces a ceasefire between the Kokang (MNDAA) forces and the military group

On January 18th, the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA) and the Myanmar military signed a ceasefire agreement with China's mediation. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning revealed this during a regular press briefing on Monday.

The signing took place after both sides met in the city of Kunming, China. While the Chinese Foreign Ministry did not release detailed information about the full agreement, it was noted that, as part of the ceasefire, the Chinese authorities reopened the China–Myanmar border gate at the Chinshwehaw border, which is near the MNDAA's controlled territory, on January 19th.

Following the MNDAA’s attack and capture of the Eastern Command Headquarters in Lashio, Myanmar, China intervened to mediate and coordinate negotiations, although earlier efforts failed. These pressures blocked the border trade routes and disrupted the trade passing through the 'Wa” State of the Kokang region. The Chinese authorities also exerted pressure by detaining MNDAA leader Péng Dàshùn in China. These pressures ultimately led to the resumption of negotiations, which resulted in the signing of the ceasefire agreement.

According to sources from Myanmar and China, Myanmar Now stated that the MNDAA forces in Lashio, where the Northeastern Regional Military Command is located, will withdraw by June of this year. Currently, the MNDAA has formed and is operating a military administration committee in Lashio.
