NUG Issues Position Statement on Press Freedom
On May 3, the National Unity Government (NUG) issued an eight-point "Position on Press Freedom and News Media", in line with the basic principle in Part 1, Section 42 of the Federal Democracy Charter that the independence of news media and the rights to obtain and report news must be protected.
The eight points state that the NUG earnestly recognizes the vital role of press freedom and of free, responsible and accountable news media in enabling the public to make important decisions correctly; that it supports the strong development of regional ethnic media; and that it firmly opposes any act that restricts, constrains or obstructs press freedom.
The position also states that the NUG resolutely opposes all restrictions and constraints that would undermine the independence, impartiality and objectivity of news media, and resolutely opposes any act that threatens or harasses media workers, and that it will work to end such acts and protect journalists.
