Karenni Civil Society Organizations Declare Recognition of the IEC as Interim Government

KNPPKSCC

On May 20, Karenni civil society organizations issued a position statement recognizing the Karenni Interim Executive Council (IEC) as the state's interim government. They said they would explore and pursue ways to cooperate with the IEC in education, health, social development and the socio-economic sectors for the people of the state, and would strengthen coordination and cooperation among civil society organizations inside the country and on the border and Karenni forces abroad in their work for the public.

The statement was issued after 38 representatives from 20 civil society organizations held a discussion in Thailand reviewing the changing military and political situation in Karenni.

Alongside the civil society organizations' three positions, the statement also included appeals to relevant groups: six addressed to the IEC, five to armed revolutionary forces and two to international organizations. The appeals to the IEC include a call to consult with relevant groups and clearly develop local administrative mechanisms.
